Teaching Students with ADHD J. Palmer Capella University Abstract In recent history, the number of students diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has grown tremendously; causing teachers to face new challenges on how to instruct students with behavioral and learning difficulties. Students with ADHD have not only the privilege, but also the right to learn according to the Public Law 94-142 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. There is growing debate about methods that are best for students with ADHD including reward systems for behavior, to medications administered to the individual. In order for a student to learn with ADHD, teachers should integrate a variety of techniques, a general knowledge of medications and†¦show more content†¦Based on the research of Bennett et al. (1996), Elliott (1988), Liu et al. (1991), and Power et al. (1995), it was predicted that: 1. Teachers knowledge of ADHD, knowledge of treatments for ADHD, and ratings of acceptability for two common treatments (medication and behavior management st rategies) would demonstrate moderate positive relationships with one another. 2. Teachers experience and training in working with students with ADHD would exhibit moderate positive relationships with their knowledge of ADHD, knowledge of treatments for ADHD, and ratings of treatment acceptability. Unfortunately some general education teachers have little to no training in teaching students with ADHD successfully. The teachers who had more information and training about ADHD and teaching techniques were found to be more likely to use the strategies and meet the academic needs of diagnosed students than teachers who had not received training (Glass, 2001). Medication and ADHD Throughout most research, teachers are shown to have different views on using medication for treatment of ADHD. Many believe that the popularity of ADHD is due to the endorsement of the medical profession; the doctors influence decision-making in the government which then results in the popularization of the concept and the ever-widening boundaries of its definition (Timimi, 2005).
